The frugal secret for DIY decor

The frugal secret for DIY decor

If you missed past weeks' newsletters you can read them all here.
Reader, many think that being frugal and having beautiful home decor do not match. Somehow making things beautiful or focusing on how your home looks is thought to be pricey and not something that a frugal person should do.

But having a beautiful home makes you feel relaxed and puts your mind at ease and it is not something that is only for those who have tons of money (or those who want to USE tons of money) on the home decor.

For about 15+ years I have used simple, yet beautiful wine boxes in decoration. Most of the time without any carpenter skills needed, like this nightstand that I have had in so many forms in different apartments too:

It's simply two wine boxes on top of each other. One with a sliding door to hide things and one wine box open to place the book you read before turning in. This is one of the simplest DIY's, and maybe that's why also one of my most loved and saved pins on Pinterest.

Wine boxes are great and very affordable ways to use at home for organizing and storing, but as well as presenting things.

You can use them as displays for the most precious things you love at home.

I had years ago in my kitchen this simple display with my grandmother's mortar and pestle with the other essential seasoning gear.

Now you are asking, but where do I get wine boxes if they are so cheap? Well, there are many options, but as a former restaurant head waiter, my first obvious answer is: ask from a restaurant.

Choose a restaurant with a long wine list, preferably a fine-dining one, and ask.

Mostly there are too many boxes, for the wine is delivered in them and the restaurants might be in trouble with the boxes - means you can get them for free.

Some other places to find wooden wine boxes for DIY from many options are a Facebook marketplace and the restaurant industry's second-hand FB groups - there are plenty of amazing things sold in those!

When you are more crafty - there are endless ways how to repurpose wooden wine boxes as pieces of furniture. If you have untreated wineboxes you can naturally stain wood using tea, vinegar, and iron. With that method, you can get even deeper colors like in this one:

This ottoman with storage I shared with you at the end of last year. It is naturally stained and we made a lid with upholstering foam to have an extra seat and use it as a tiny coffee table (or tea of course 🤭). With round style tiny feet it ended up being quite pretty, didn't it?

Using tea to stain wood naturally is one of my favorite ways to darken it and make it look weathered. As an avid tea drinker, I find it fun to use tea in other ways than just as a beverage – and well it costs next to nothing.
