With or without?

Reader, did you know that March is caffeine awareness month? Many choose tea over coffee to avoid caffeine, but the truth is that tea does contain caffeine too! Except for herbal teas - of course.

Like coffee, the tea plant contains caffeine, which in tea is called theine. So choosing tea to cut out caffeine completely does not help.

I read from a tea book, that 75% of theine infuses into the tea within the FIRST two minutes.

Which is insane!

So if you are steeping your tea leaves twice that means the second cup contains obviously so much less theine.

Of the true teas, choose the least labored tea varieties, such as white and green tea for they have smaller amounts of theine than the teas that go through the longer manufacturing process.

So if you want less caffeine (aka theine) to enhance your sleep choose white or green tea over black tea or pu’erh in the evenings.

One regular cup of coffee contains 95 mg of caffeine and black teas have up to 70 mg whereas white and green teas only 15 to 45mg per 240ml (8oz) serving.

If you want to skip caffeine completely jump to tisanes and enjoy other botanicals in your teacup that the tea plant itself - everybody knows our sleepytime friend chamomile, right?

At the moment I am testing and researching some more iced tea recipes for you and nighttime herbal tea blends too. Let me know if you have any suggestions, requests, or questions I would love to get you the answers and chat more about tea, just hit the reply button and let me know!

Meanwhile here is my newest naturally caffeine-free iced tea recipe, made out of rooibos!

Every day makes a difference. ♡
