Natural living bucket list for September

Hi Reader,

the darkness has started to creep in here in the North, though we live in the south of Finland, the autumn time darkness is coming on quite strongly already. This is the time to wander in the forest among the autumn leaves whenever there is enough light and bake and make more things at home.

Here is the monthly Natural lifestyle inspiration dose that I have for you now for September:

  • Gather autumn leaves for wreaths. Create a DIY twig wreath base using hallen birch branches or other pliable branches and decorate them with the fall colours. The maple leaves are my favourites: colourful and large leaves are an easy way to make a stunning natural decoration.
  • Make dark hot chocolate. Take warm woolen blankets out of the closet and cook some velvety dark hot chocolate for the darkening evenings.
  • Make seed and nut butters from scratch. When harvest is already gathered, it is best to turn to root vegetables, seeds, and nuts. Try sunflower seed paste or roasted almond butter to make your dishes and breads more intriguing and versatile.
  • Forage pine cones for decoration. Don't need to be a squirrel, but the pine cones are beautiful foraged materials for the wreaths and fall center pieces. You can also make with wire some simple pine cone candle cuffs for your candles to catch any dripping stearine. I don't have a full tutorial, but let me know if you would like me to show how they are done!
  • Make long weekend hikes. Autumn time is a good time to recharge in Nature. Wear comfortable shoes and take your hubby or a good friend to spend some time wandering on hiking trails. Live with the seasons and take advantage of the grounding time of the autumn, and enjoy the last warming beams of light.
  • Gather apples and make some apple pie. Apples are an amazing thing to make apple jams and juices but as well as soft apple pie. Now it is time for that!

Reader, today is the day! Finally the Cinnamon Roll Day is here - the Saturday 4.10.! Cozy blanket, a cup of steaming dark hot chocolate, a good book and yes - a freshly baked korvapuusti, a cinnamon roll, in the other hand. Also this year (like every year) at the traditional cafรฉ where I work, we have already yesterday piled...

A girl is grabbing one of the yummy-looking Danish cinnamon snails, kanelsnegle, on the serving board on a coffee table.

Reader, the next in our Nordic bun recipe series is the delicious Danish treat: Kanelsnegle, the Cinnamon Snails. These are quite similar in taste to Finnish Cinnamon buns but slightly simpler to shape. Use my go-to basic sugar bun dough for this one! Roll the dough out and mix the filling: 100 g soft butter (room temperature) 150 g caster sugar 1,5 tbsp ground cinnamon pinch of salt (if you are using unsalted butter) Mix together and spread on the outrolled dough. Roll it, but not too...
