Would you put flowers in your tea?

🌿 Natural Lifestyle Letters

Hi Reader,

Many edible flowers can be enjoyed far beyond the garden. You can gently pick a few fragrant petals, dry them, and save a little piece of summer for the months ahead.

When collecting flowers for tea, always make sure they are edible and haven't been treated with pesticides.

Harvest them on a dry, sunny morning after the dew has disappeared, then spread the petals out on a tray or sieve in a well-ventilated place until they are completely dry.

At our summer cottage, we collected plenty of Midsummer roses this Midsummer (well, it was a match, right?).

Aren't the bright rose petals beautiful β™‘?

Once petals are fully dry (if you crush one, it crumbles completely), store them in an airtight glass jar and keep them away from light and heat.

When it's time for tea, brew it like any herbal tea: just add a tiny handful of dried petals to your teapot and pour over almost boiling water. Rose petals are lovely on their own, but they also pair beautifully with black tea, hibiscus, chamomile, or a little lavender for a fragrant homemade tea blend.

If you'd like more inspiration, I have gathered together 9 flowers to use in tea, along with flavor profiles and tea blending suggestions to get you started with floral teas.

Finding plants around you to use in different ways is one of those quiet little rituals I love about natural living. A flower that gave you joy with its beauty in the garden in summer can brighten a teacup long after the season has passed.

Every day makes a difference β™‘

🌿 Natural Lifestyle Letters Reader, making iced coffee from scratch is crazy simple. Here is what you basically need for a lightly seasoned and sweetened iced coffee made with a French press for two: 2 tbsp coffee grounds (15 grams) 1 tsp sugar (optional but rounds the flavour nicely) 1/2tsp cardamom or cinnamon (optional) 150 ml water (130 grams) Heat the water, brew the strong coffee with seasoning and sweeteners in a French press. Let it steep 3 to 5 minutes. Then to make it icy and sweet:...

Cup of Ivan Chai tea with the homemade fermented fireweed loose-leaf tea in a jar.

🌿 Natural Lifestyle Letters Reader, do you ever wish you could enjoy black tea normally, without checking what time of day it is because it has caffeine in it? I stumbled upon Ivan Chai when I was studying more about teas and herbs (you can find my reading suggestions here). Ivan chai is an infusion made of fireweed leaves (also known as willowherb) that have been turned black with the natural process of oxidizing and fermenting. After the process, the flavour is similar to black tea, and...
